Annie Mildred (Mayhew) Lowery

Annie Mildred Mayhew Lowery, a beloved community leader and dedicated family matriarch, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2025, at the age of 97. Born on January 6, 1928, she was the oldest child of the late Johnnie and Minnie Mayhew of Davidson, NC. Annie Mildred’s life was marked by a passion for family, church and community.

Her journey through life found its true fulfillment on October 13, 1946, when she married Louis Gene Lowery. Together, they raised a family, and Annie's happiest moments were spent in the company of loved ones and friends.

A lifelong member of Davidson Presbyterian Church USA, Annie was deeply involved in her church community. She dedicated a significant portion of her adult life to advocating for equality and desegregation, reflecting her strong commitment to her faith and community.

Annie Mildred was predeceased by her parents, Johnnie and Minnie Mayhew; her husband, Louis Gene Lowery; her siblings, Johnsie Mayhew, Evelyn Mayhew Carr, Mae Cowan Graham, James Edward “Knot” Mayhew, John Lee “Ham” Mayhew, and Oscar Lee Shipp; and her sons, Lewis Gene Lowery, Jr., and daughter, Veronica Howard.

She is survived by five daughters: LaGretta Neal, Johnsie (David) Beatty, Brenda (Tollis) Johnson, Agnes (Marcus) Rivens, and Mary (Robert) Black; one brother, Floyd Mayhew; and two sisters, Jessie Bell Frontis, and Daisy Lee Raeford. Also surviving her are one sister-in-law, Delorus Williams; 20 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.  In addition, she leaves behind a cherished circle of "Bonus Daughters:" Patricia Stinson, Laura Black-White, Gloria Rucker, Mary Tuck, Elizabeth Wilson, Sylvia Candace Brown, Valecia Smith, Meryline Wilson, Emma Alexander, Sandy Myers, Belinda Ramsey, Zula Black, and Carol Cuthberson; and "Bonus Sons:" Dr. Ron Williams, Ray Sinclair, Tom Tuck, Wilson Stinson, Bobby Bost, Odell Black, Thomas White, and Bryan Hall.
