Brenda, daughter of the late Alfred Burton and Ruby Smith, was born November 29, 1952 in Mooresville, NC. She transitioned peacefully on Monday, March 28, 2022 with family by her side. She was preceded in death by her husband Gary Brooks, Sr.; sister Betty Jean Smith; brothers: Ernest Smith and Eric Murray.
Brenda was a 1971 graduate of East Lincoln High School and was a member of the Pep, Science, Math and Photography clubs. She also served as the Secretary for the Student Council. She attended Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC. She was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Denver, NC. She was employed by Security Forces for Spirit Square, Mecklenburg County Sheriff Department, Carolinas Medical Center, and Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.
Those left to cherish precious memories are her loving mother, Ms. Ruby Faye Smith of Denver, NC; two daughters: Tanya Brooks-Clark (Felton) and Kristal Brooks (Cori) both of Charlotte, NC; five sons: Tyrone Brooks (Kathy) of Lincolnton, NC, Gary Brooks, Jr. of Charlotte, NC, Dr. Teon Brooks of Brooklyn, New York, Gerald Sykes of Charlotte, NC, and Gary Dickey of Stanley, NC; two sisters: Shirley Torrence and Erlene Howard; two brothers: Robert Wayne Smith (Cassandra) and Edward Leroy Smith; her aunts, Elizabeth Anderson and Elder Mildred Maddox; seventeen grandchildren: Ta’Osha Mills, LaTya Brooks, TaVoisia Williams-Brooks, Destiny Sykes, Caniya Huitt, Aryanna Brooks, Zachary Brooks, Cameron Craig, RiJonnia Dickey, Gary Huitt, Jolie Brooks, Elijah Brooks, Noah Brooks, Grayson Brooks, Zy’marion Dickey, Zavier Dickey, and Jace Brooks; honorary daughter, Farah Pierre-Louis; six great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
