Charles Whitener was born on September 19, 1938 in Catawba County North Carolina, to Charles and Elsie Lee Whitener(Formerly Hill). The oldest of 6, he was followed in birth by Margaret(Sue), Dorothy, Clafter, Patricia and Willard. Known affectionately as “Bud” by friends and family, Charles was moved to the Iron Station area of Lincoln County as child and raised on what is now Beth Haven Church Rd in Denver. He was raised in the Tucker’s Grove community where he attended nearby Schools and regularly attended Tucker’s Grove United Methodist Church with Elsie who ushered and sang in choirs at the Church and tented at the annual Camp Meeting for over 60 years. It was during these years that he attended a corn shucking in the Little Egypt area where he first met a 9 year old Maxine Nixon, known as “Toosie”. Unbeknownst to them that meeting would lead to lifetime of love and companionship.
After graduating from Newbold High School in Lincolnton, Charles was accepted into North Carolina A&T State College in Greensboro NC, where he studied Business Administration and participated in the US Army’s ROTC program. During his active time in the Army Charles was stationed at Fort Sill in Comanche County Oklahoma (Built in part by the 10th Cavalry aka “Buffalo soldiers”).
Charles transitioned to the everlasting on the morning of April 30,2025 peacefully after years of declining health in the presence of Maxine, his wife and companion of 64 years. Charles is survived by Maxine, Sons Gregory of Dublin Ga and Charles lll (Andreasus) of Greensboro NC, grandchildren, Rashida Marlowe(Kalon) of Richmond Va, Anika Whitener of Winterville NC and Aalihya Whitener of Albany Georgia; Great grandsons Howard Marlowe of Richmond and Easton Favors of Albany.. Surviving Siblings are Dorothy Hamilton of Charlotte NC, Clafter Whitener of Charlotte, Patricia Chambers of Charlotte and Willard Whitener of Denver NC. and dozens of Nieces and Nephews.
