Dora Withers Obituary

Dora Carr Withers, daughter of the late Fred Monroe Carr and Irene Graham Carr, was born on June 29, 1939, in Mecklenburg County. She departed earthly life into God’s arms on January 8, 2024, at her home. She is preceded in death by fourteen siblings: Gertie Bost (Bud), Robert Carr, Daisy Berry (Rosie), Louise Little, Rosa May Hemphill (Willie), Nellie Morrison (Jimmy), Elizabeth Taylor (Clarence), James Graham (May), Bessie Boss (Troy), Johnny Carr (Ruby), Orlando Carr (Evelyn), Doris Withers (James), CW Graham, Frank Graham, and William Graham.

Dora attended Mecklenburg County Schools and graduated from Torrence Lytle in 1958. She was employed by Huntersville Oaks Nursing Home where she retired in 2001. Dora loved to cook and is most known for her famous Strawberry Cake. She enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, and dancing.

During her youth, she was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. After marriage, she joined Union Bethel AME Zion Church, where she was an active member for sixty-five years. During this time, she served as a Deaconess, Usher, Missionary, and member of the Kitchen Committee, Contemporary Choir, and Halleluiah Chorus.

She was joined in holy matrimony to Henry Mauzon Withers Jr. on February 1, 1959. To this union, six children were born: one daughter, Carol Cuthbertson, and five sons, James Withers, Michael Withers, Henry Withers III (Mozelle), Todd Withers (Camillia), and Roderic Withers (Tangy). She leaves to cherish the granddaughter she raised, Cohila Davis (Ronald), one brother Samuel Carr, fifteen grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren children, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
