Queen Ella Louise Black Cherry, daughter of the late Frank and Maggie Black, was born May 17, 1924, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. She departed this life peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones, on August 30, 2019. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Robert Cherry; two sisters, Johnsie Mae Cherry and Frances Bobo; four brothers, Franklin Black, Lewis Black, Howard Black, and William Black; three sons, Curtis Cherry, Roy Cherry, and Donnie Cherry; and one greatgranddaughter, Janiah “NaNa” Hall. Ella was a lifetime member of Watkins Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, where she served as President of the Usher Board, President and Treasurer of the Deaconess Board, and a member of the Woman’s Home and Overseas Missionary Society until her health declined. Ella attended the Iredell County School System. She was employed with Iredell County School System and Canon Mills. She was also a domestic engineer. Those left to cherish: two daughters, Pastor Paulette Cherry White (Pastor Johnny) of Killeen, TX, and Pastor Donna Cherry Torrence (Pastor Victor) of Mooresville, NC; three sons, Kenneth Cherry (Carol) of Mooresville, NC, Robert Lee Cherry of Mooresville, NC, and Randy Cherry (Phyllis) of Mooresville, NC; sixteen grandchildren; thirty-seven great-grandchildren, twenty-six great-great-grandchildren; three goddaughters, Phyllis Alexander, Pattie Reid, and Helen Lee; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and friends.
