Emma (affectionately known as Aunt Emma), daughter of the late Lillie Mae and Eugene Howard, was born in Mecklenburg County on August 17, 1939, as the seventh of nine children. She departed this life at Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center on July 24, 2021.
She attended Mecklenburg County Schools including Ada Jenkins Grade School and Torrence Lytle High School. In 1957, Emma continued her education at Band Beauty College and became a Licensed Cosmetologist. She worked in the Food and Health Industry for more than 45 years!
In 1960, Emma married Willie James Payne and had three children, Allen Payne (Beverly), Audrey Payne and Willie Evetta Payne. Emma’s grandchildren, Ashley, Marcus, Montoya, Brandon “B.B.”, QDJ, Allen Jr., Kayla, and Phillip and her great grandchildren Faith, Tyler, Jake, Major, Khloe and Braya affectionately called her “Nanny.” She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, daughter, grandson, and siblings, Severn, C.W., Thomas, Nelson, Dean, Don, Fannie, and Lola.
Emma’s spiritual rise in Christ was at Torrence Chapel AME Zion Church where she served on the Missionary Board, Lay Council and Culinary staff. Emma had a passion for baking and would ensure that the holidays and reunions were filled with her delicious baked goods and other cooking. She also enjoyed traveling and family time. She leaves many loved ones to cherish fond memories with including her special niece, Deanna.
