Ernest Franklin Sloan was born to the late Frank and Hattie Sloan on September 7, 1936 in Huntersville, North Carolina. He departed this life on June 30, 2021. He was preceded in death by his son, Darryl Sloan; grandson, Jervon Sloan; and his brother, John Sloan.
Ernest accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior at an early age and was a member of St. Phillip Baptist Church in Huntersville, North Carolina for many years. He attended Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina in his later years.
He graduated from Torrence-Lytle High School in Huntersville, North Carolina in 1953 where he played football and baseball. After high school, Ernest worked at Dixie Bearings for many years until drafted to serve in the United States Army in 1961. He honorably served active duty until August 1963 and remained in the National Guard until August 1967. Ernest received his CDL license and worked as a professional long-haul driver for over 25 years, working for Ryder Trucking Company and P.I.E. Trucking. He received an award for over One Million Safe Driving Miles as a truck driver and often mentored younger drivers along his path prior to retiring in 1991.
Ernest was an avid gardener and often shared his plentiful produce with the community. He also enjoyed listening to various genres of music and watching his favorite sports teams on television, the Dallas Cowboys and the Atlanta Braves. Ernest was very loving and sociable. He never met a stranger and he loved to laugh and joke with his family and friends.
To celebrate his life and to carry on his loving legacy, he leaves behind his wife of over 47 years, Dorothy Ross Sloan of Charlotte, NC; four sons, Gregory Sloan of Cornelius, NC; Ernest Sloan (Diane) of Mooresville, NC; Andre Sloan (Karen) of Cornelius, NC; Kelvin Andre’ Sloan (Sabrina) of Waxhaw, NC; three daughters, Cosonya Sloan Johnson (Randy) of Cornelius, NC; Tabitha Moore of Charlotte, NC; Samantha Moore of Charlotte, NC; eighteen grandchildren, Demetril, Yashica, Nick (Claudia), MarDarius (Mia), Robert (Shaniqua), Deconte, Colin, Adrian, Marty, Tre, Hayzon, Niya, Mary, Warren, Justin, Kyle, Kingston, Konnor; twenty-two great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; one niece, Johnnie Mae Fant (John); three great nieces; one great nephew; and a host of cousins and friends.
