Mrs. Gladys Eliza McCain Byers, born October 19, 1925 to the late Willie Louise Johnson and Price McCain, transitioned from her earthly life unto life eternal, on Saturday, July 6, 2019. She lived out most of her 93 years in Davidson, North Carolina. She was married to the late Riccardo Alexander Byers of Landis, North Carolina. Gladys received her education at Torrence- Lytle School in Huntersville, NC. After her marriage she moved to Landis and worked in the local mills of Landis, NC, Kannapolis, NC and Mooresville, NC. After the death of her mother, she moved back to Davidson to live. Gladys was a long-time member of Sandy Ridge African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Landis, NC. Before her health declined, she was active in several organizations: the Pastor’s Aide Society, the Home Missions Society, the Life Members Council and a former member of the Senior Choir. Her grandchildren called her “muh” and always encouraged her to show off her dance moves! She loved listening to music; she loved her grandsons; and she loved wearing her finger waves. Gladys also enjoyed going to the Senior Center in Davidson to have lunch with neighbors and friends. She often came home with prizes from winning the most bingo games. She never went to a morning church service without a hat on her head. With the union of Gladys and Riccardo, five children were born. Two have gained their angel wings; her son, William Alexander Byers and daughter, Linda Darnell Byers Faulkner. Her survivors include daughters: Patricia Latter, Paulette Byers, and Harriet Withers; step-daughter Stella Byers Cephas. 12 grandchildren: Eric Byers, whom she raised; Brian (Tammy) Faulkner; Nakia (Tameka) Faulkner; Marcus (Cora) Faulkner; Johnsie Turner, Paul Turner; Tia Byers and Carlon Byers, David (Donna) Cephas, Helen Cephas, Teresa Cephas, Page King. 21 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. God-children: Mrs. Hollis Moore, Cedric Moore, and Ms. Monica Melchor. Nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends mourn the loss of Mama Gladys.
