Hugh Clayton Cowan affectionately known as Clayton was born in Rowan County on August 1, 1930 and was the son of the late Dorothy Westmoreland Cowan and Sherrill Cowan. He entered into eternal rest on November 26, 2022, at age 92, at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville NC after a lengthy illness.
He was preceded in death by JoAnne Cowan-Phifer and Jordan Phifer (sister & brother-in-law), Veedis Phifer (niece), Norris “Morris” Cowan (brother) and Chandellar Clayton Cowan (nephew; who was named after him).
He is survived by his loving wife of fifty four years, Geneva Jones Cowan, and ten children; Mozetta Dobbins, Betty (Aldine) Cloud, Hugh Clayton (Mavis) Cowan Jr., Nettie (Quentin)Johnson, Darlene (Jeff) Cowan, Ray Anthony Cowan, Paulette Cowan, Herman (Sudell) Cowan, Thurman (Kim) Cowan and E’Lan Cowan. Also, reared in the home Shakeia Cowan, Ayanna Cowan, and Chaseton, Christian and Chloe Cowan–Nichols (great grandchildren). Twenty four grandchildren, twenty four great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren; one sister; Rachel Sherrill Cowan, one brother; Richard (Ethel) Cowan and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, close relatives and friends.
