John Edward Derwort, 79, of Mooresville, NC, passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at the Mitchell Mack Hospice House in Mooresville.
Born in Akron, Ohio, on August 2, 1946, John was the eldest of seven children of Bernard J. Derwort, PhD (Mathematics), and Jessie (Powell) Derwort. He was preceded in death by his parents, his five brothers—James, Joe, Jerry, Jeffery, and Mike Derwort—and his sister, Jan Derwort.
John is survived by his wife, Gail (Cooley) Derwort; his son, Jeffery (Stefanie) Derwort of Camden, SC; and his granddaughters, Lily and Ella Derwort.
He graduated from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL, in November 1971 and was a founding member of the Delta Chi Fraternity chapter at the university in 1967.
From 1968 to 1970, John served honorably in the US Army and was a Vietnam Veteran.
Beginning in June 1974, John worked as a Biologist with Duke Power—now Duke Energy—in the Environmental sector, dedicating 45 years to his profession.
A passionate militaria collector, John possessed remarkable knowledge of European and American history. He was a movie enthusiast and an avid reader, always with a book in hand.
John was a caring husband, father, and grandfather. He cherished visiting his granddaughters and joining in their play.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place, and a private memorial will be held by his family.
