Mr. Johnny Ray DuBose, beloved son of the late Curlee Abram DuBose and Fannie Mae Turner DuBose was born February 22, 1943, seventh of nine children, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He was a lifelong resident of Davidson, North Carolina. Mr. DuBose peacefully entered eternal rest on Friday morning, May 25, 2018 at the Levine and Dickson Hospice Center, Huntersville, North Carolina, following a prolonged illness. Mr. DuBose joined Gethsemane Baptist Church in Davidson as a child and grew in stature, wisdom, and endurance of his salvation. He was a trustee, choir member. and a faithful servant of God. He loved and cherish his church family and God. He attended the Mecklenburg County Schools, Ada Jenkins Elementary and Torrence Lyle High School. Mr., DuBose was a successful and gifted athlete. He played both basketball and football for the schools. Peers and others described him as a great athlete, destined for world-class, because of the following qualities, God fearing, discipline, drive, self-confidence, aggressiveness, competitiveness, commitment, focus, raw talent, high tolerance for pain, determination, adaptability, emotional maturity and others. He had a winning spirit. These qualities were also present during the fight through his medical challenges. With the help of God, (Johnny) was a true champion. According to II Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” In his early years, after graduating from Torrence Lytle High School in 1963, he was employed by Davidson College and retired after 43 years of service in the Physical Plant Department. He cherished, loved his employment, sports department and all other associations and amenities within the college environment. Johnny’ s was a very quiet, meek and humble individual. But if you mention anything about sports, history, and end time prophecies, he would respond with a “euphoric” sense of freedom and knowledge. Mr. DuBose love for sports intensified throughout his life. When engaged, you would feel his energy, passion and true love for life/family, sports, history, gardening and God, which became a spiritual experience. He was married to the late Mary Frances Barringer DuBose for 43 years. To this union, his son, Lothanio was born, but died shortly after birth. Mr. DuBose was a godly dad to his step-son Phillip Steven (Steve) Barringer and a guardian son, Gary White. He also shared his love, kindness and generosity throughout the DuBose, White and Barringer families.
