Karee Elizabeth (Mills) Heaggans

Karee Elizabeth Mills Heaggans of Statesville, North Carolina passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at the age of 93. She was born on August 7, 1926 in Rowan County, NC to the late R.D. Mills and Estelle Rankin Mills. Mrs. Heaggans was preceded in death by her husband, James Lincoln Heaggans, Sr., one daughter, Rhonda Annette Heaggans and son, James Lincoln Heaggans, Jr. (Bro), four siblings, Richard C. Mills, Dewitt Mills, Eunice A. Mills Jetton, Annie Doris Mills, and sister-friend Sarah L. Reeves.Karee graduated from South Iredell Elementary School in 1941 and from Unity High School in 1945. While at Unity High, she was a member of the Glee Club, 1st and 2nd Soprano, member of the Girl Reserve Club, and a member of the Home Economics Club. After she graduated from Unity High School, she then went on to attend the Stewart’s School of Beauty Culture in Asheville, NC. As a licensed cosmetologist, Karee worked her magic in salons and funeral homes in North Carolina and New York before finally settling down with her husband in Baltimore, Maryland. Karee Heaggans was a faithful servant of GOD. While living in Baltimore, MD she joined Trinity Presbyterian Church and actively participated in the following boards and committees from 1979-1997:  Usher Board, served as Co-Chairperson, Birthday Fellowship, UPW organization, and UPW subcommittees (Hospitality Committee, Patrons Committee). She also sang on the Women’s Choir. In 1997, Mrs. Heaggans moved back to North Carolina and returned to her home church, Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church, Cleveland, NC where she served on the UPW Committee until her health began to decline due to limited mobility. Her children and grandchildren remained by her side through it all. In addition to her four daughters: G. Vanessa Heaggans of Baltimore, MD, Deana D. Heaggans of Troutman, NC, Sarah Yvonne Heaggans (Victor) of Baltimore, MD and Lisa A. Heaggans of Mooresville, NC, Mrs. Karee Heaggans is survived by eight grandchildren Travis Torrence, Joseph Jones (Kendra), Juanita Heaggans, D’Juan White, Dominic Diggs, D’Nai Heaggans, Darrius Heaggans, and Devin Heaggans, five great grandchildren, D’Miyah, D’Nadia, Joshua, Diyanna, Dreyon, Kaci, and Kendall, brother-in-law Joseph Heaggans (Dot), sisters-in-law Onevva Heaggans, Alfredia Blackwell (Robert), Gladys Stevenson (George), Vernie Smith (John), and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
