Martha Brewer Obituary

Martha Ann Young Brewer, known affectionately to many as “Mott”, was born March 1,1937, in Iredell County, North Carolina, to Mary (Rutherford) Young and Walter Jay Young. She transitioned from this life peacefully on September 21, 2025, at Novant Health Medical Center in Huntersville, NC.

Martha was the third of four children born to Mary and Walter, including Annie, Ralph, and Alexander Young. The Young family were dedicated members of Saint James Baptist Church. She was raised in Mooresville, NC, and educated in Iredell County Schools. During her adolescent years, she sometimes missed attending school to help contribute to the family's needs by picking cotton in the wee hours of the morning, sitting with the elderly, and babysitting throughout the town. She attended Dunbar School from grades 1-12. Martha graduated as valedictorian of her senior class in 1956. Martha was an overachiever and stood out amongst her peers in intellect and determination. She was very active in athletics and extracurriculars such as archery, basketball, drum majorette, and volleyball, to name a few.

After graduating from Dunbar School, Martha attended the illustrious North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in the fall of 1956. She studied education during her time at N.C. A&T, where she ultimately completed her studies with a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education. During her time at N.C. A&T, Martha, and 4 other pledgees joined and became proud members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.- Alpha Mu chapter (fall of 1958). Martha was the Vice President and Dean of Pledges of her chapter. She took great pride in her dedication and service to the organization and what it still stands for today. She graduated from N.C. A&T in the fall of 1959.

Martha is preceded in death by both parents, one sister, two brothers, and her husband Ed, along with a host of family and friends. Martha affectionately leaves behind three beautiful children: Karen (Pepper), Edward (June), & Marshall. Six adored grandchildren: Janelle Brewer, Jared Brewer, Joshua Brewer, Brichet Banner, Chase Banner, & Rhayne Banner. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and many family & friends.

Martha will be remembered for her selflessness, courage, and passion for helping others. There was not a thing she wouldn’t do for those whom she loved. She lived a life of integrity, character, morals, and love. She will forever be remembered and greatly missed by all those who got the chance to know and love her. May her memory live on in the hearts of us all… Psalms 23.
