Nannie Raye Houston Potts, age 80, passed Friday, November 9, 2018. She taught social sciences is Mecklenburg County after college and retired from teaching in Iredell County. She taught for over thirty years, first at Torrence Lytle High School, her Alma Mater. Then she retired from South Iredell High School in 1993. She served on the Cornelius Town Commission in 1980 and later became the first and only black mayor in the Town of Cornelius. She has received numerous awards and honors for her leadership and community activism. She along with Vertie Torrence led many summer programs for children at the Smithville Community Center. She is survived by her husband, Gerald (Mickey) Potts, three sons: Jerry (Patenna) Potts, Gary (June) Potts and Milton (Michelle)Potts, 9 grandchildren, 12 great- grandchildren. The services will be at Torrence Chapel A.M.E. Zion, 21517 Torrence Chapel Road, Cornelius, NC. The family will receive friends Friday, November 16, 2018 between 6 PM and 8 PM and Saturday, November 17, 2018 from 10 AM to 11 AM. The funeral service will start at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that any donations be made to the Torrence Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church Scholarship Fund.
