Patricia Mercer Obituary

Ms. Patricia Conner Mercer affectionately known as “Sis and “Pat” was called home to be with her heavenly Father on Friday, July 8, 2022, at CMC-Atrium, Charlotte, North Carolina.

Patricia was born to the late George & Teretha Houston Conner on September 11, 1942, in Mecklenburg County. She graduated from Torrence Lytle High School in Huntersville, North Carolina. Patricia was a faithful member of Columbus Chapel AME Zion Church until her health began to decline. She was a member of the missionary ministry, the choir, and a Deaconess. Patricia loved to sing and could always be found in the choir on Sunday mornings using her strong beautiful Alto voice to usher us into the presence of the Lord.  She was also the choir director of the children’s choir known as the Singing Angels.  Almost every Sunday she was going somewhere to sing, either with the church choir, children’s choir or the Joylettes who were a group of beautiful ladies including our dear Aunt Fannie Mae the matriarch of the family. Patricia was employed at Cannon Mills, Cabarrus County Schools, and La Petite Academy. Patricia loved taking care of children and whenever you saw her, she had somebody’s children with her. Patricia loved to cook. Her house was the neighborhood hangout where all our friends would come and eat, laugh, and tell jokes. She made sure you were going to eat something when you came into the house. She has fed so many people over the years and she always made them feel welcomed. I would tell her she needed to open a restaurant and call it “Pat’s Place,” she would say” I just love to do it.”

Patricia was preceded in death by her parents George and Teretha Houston Conner, her son Charles Arnold Conner, her daughter Regina Denise Mercer, and her brother Thomas Conner.

Patricia leaves to cherish her memories her husband Joseph Mercer of Charlotte, North Carolina, one daughter Sharon Shinn (Timothy) of Concord, North Carolina, one brother Ronnie Conner of Kannapolis, North Carolina, two aunts; Norva Houston Howie of Dothan, Alabama, and Lela Johnson, of Davidson, North Carolina, four grandchildren: Corey Mercer (Casey) of Harrisburg, North Carolina, Tyrell Mayhew of Mooresville, North Carolina, Timothy Shinn Jr. of Concord, North Carolina, Breann Conner of Salisbury, North Carolina and three great grandchildren, Atavion Fowler and Makayla Mercer of Harrisburg, North Carolina, and Izaiah James Raymer of Mooresville, North Carolina; two special friends, Ms. Phillis Black of Kannapolis North Carolina and Mrs. Ann Summerlin of Concord, North Carolina.

Patricia was the sweetest, humblest, and funniest person you could meet. She loved her family unconditionally; she always saw the best in us. She would give you her last without hesitation and without expecting anything in return. She loved the Lord and could always be heard singing throughout the house any time of the day or night. She imparted some much wisdom in us and exemplified patience.  Whenever her kindness was being taken advantage of, she wouldn’t get upset, she would say '' I don’t let that worry me, God will take care of it, you just sit back and wait and watch God.`` We are truly going to miss her beautiful spirit and her living example of what love is.  We may be sad and broken hearted, but we know you are rejoicing in the presence of the Lord and seeing your children again. We will love you always and you will forever be in our hearts.
