Pauline Houston Obituary

Mrs. Pauline Constance Vanderburg Houston was born in Iredell County, North Carolina, June 16, 1928, to the late James Lee and Naomi Sherrill Vanderburg, and gained her Heavenly Wings on Wednesday, January 29, 2020, at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, Mooresville, NC. following a brief illness.

Pauline attended the Morrows Chapel School and later attended and graduated from Dunbar High School, Mooresville, NC

She was a beacon in her community in her community, a     loving, caring person who looked for ways to help others. Pauline loved people and was always ready and willing to do all she could to help. She often provided transportation to doctor appointments, grocery shopping and other errands for her neighbors and friends. She enjoyed visiting the nursing homes and hospitals in Mooresville and surrounding areas. She loved to laugh and enjoyed doing what ever she could to help anyone.

Pauline was dedicated to serving in her church – Faith United Methodist church, where she served as President of the United Methodist Women, Chairperson of Administrative Council and the Outreach Committees; she also served on the Hospitality Committee, Pastor Parrish Relation Committee, Finance Committee, and she was a Sunday School Teacher.

After her retirement from Burlington Industries, she was very involved in the Senior Citizens Club at the Winnie Hooper Community Center. She helped plan meetings, activities and trips that would fun for the members. 

Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, Nathaniel L. Houston, Sr., son, Nathaniel L. Houston, Jr., grandsons, Nathaniel L. Houston, III, and Jonathan Houston, and daughter-in- law, Peggy Houston.

She leaves to cherish her memories devoted son, Thurman B. Houston (Lavetta), daughter, Vanessa H. Moore (Joseph), and stepdaughter, Sara H. Phifer; Grandchildren, Rosalind Campbell, Shamika Sherrill (Robby), Janel Moore (special friend, Antonio), Denise Powell (Alex), Patrick Houston, Darryl Hooper, Gary Phifer and Jeannetta Phifer. Great grandchildren, Aliyah Campbell, Raekwon Sherrill, Joseph Sherrill, Elajah Moore, Arianna Powell, Iva Stewart Barre, Jacquelyne Jones, Johnny Jones, Jakeyah Neal, Jonathan Houston, Nathaniel Houston, IV, and Sinclaire Houston, and great-great grandchild, Braelyn P. Sherrill; brother, Purcell C. Vanderburg, sister in law, Mary G. Vanderburg and special niece, Dorothy J. Stewart.
