Richard Hall Obituary

As we all travel through life, we all wear many hats. Richard was no exception. He proudly wore each hat with pride and dignity. Most important was his husband hat. His love and support of his wife, Gretchen, was evident as he not only respected, but encouraged her through her own life ventures. His partner of 47 years, the two complimented each other and became a model for their family. Richard was an amazing father. He was strong and supportive, teaching by example. He was his kid’s biggest fan, whether it was coming to kill a spider for them, support them at a sporting event, or a shoulder to cry on, Richard was always present. In 1991, he was crowned his “Paw Paw” hat that was the start of a journey that would change his life forever. He captured the hearts of many other children in the community, earning the name “Uncle Richard” to many as they cherished the mentorship he gave them. He was not only firm but kind. He respected his children and taught them the way of life by example, allowing them to make their own decisions and mistakes and encouraged to learn from them. He created a memorable childhood. Richard was a stickler for education. He attended Morningside High School in Statesville, NC and graduated with the class of 1961. He chose to further his education at one of the nation’s historically black college universities, Shaw University in Raleigh, NC. Shortly after, Richard accepted another hat that he wore proudly. He was inducted into the U.S Army in 1964 and served as a vehicle mechanic during the Vietnam War. He received several medals and earned the rank of Specialist. His love to serve continued once he returned home. Richard became the first African American officer for the town of Mooresville. He was a pioneer, paving the way for future generations to come. He was a respectable man and dedicated to his community. Retiring the officer hat, he took to the road and became a driver for Consolidated Freight trucking company where he would later retire. His love to travel and meet new people drew him to this career and allowed for him to provide for his growing family.
