Roberta McCombs Obituary

Roberta McCombs was born in Sherrills Ford, North Carolina in November 11,1929. She is the daughter of Margie Belle Rawls-McCombs and Clauzell McCombs

Her beloved siblings were Lugenia Fishe, Arvenda Polson, Hazel Allen, Ozell McCombs, Willard “Doc” McCombs, Leon McCombs, Robert McCombs and Clifton McCombs.

She attended Catawba-Rosenwald High School, Bennett College and she received her x-ray technician degree from the Long Island College Hospital. She enjoyed a long and successful career as a x-ray technician Her priorities  included family, friends and world travel.

Roberta was a fierce advocate for civil rights and she fought against injustice for all oppressed people. She marched for civil rights in the sixties and stood boldly for justice and fairness in this society her whole life. Roberta lived life on her own terms, traveling and exploring different cultures and societies. She particularly liked to talk about her trip to Papua New Guinea and the people she met in this area of the world.

Roberta said that when she was very young she used to lie in a field and watch the planes fly overheard and tell herself that one day she would go where those airplanes were going. Roberta made this dream come true and she visited six of the seven continents. Roberta McCombs was a woman ahead of her times, she envisioned justice and joy and lived her life seeking justice for those around her and expressing joy in the way she loved good music, great conversation and a really good party.

We have been privileged as her family to know someone whose vision of life always encompassed people from all cultures and whose expression of joy included making the people around her feel comfortable and accepted. Roberta was a genuinely good person who lived life to the fullest and encouraged all around her to live their very best life.

Roberta explored Buddhism, and Tai-Chi and remained open minded about her understanding of the world.

Roberta had two children, the late Richard Person and Andresa McCombs Person who she leaves behind along with her seventy two nieces and nephew and two goddaughters; Gloria Connell and Beverly Ien; and sisters in law; Etta McCombs and Juanita McCombs.

We have each had wonderful times with Roberta all of our lives and there are no words for how much we will miss her.
