Samuel Mayhew Obituary

Samuel MacArthur Mayhew was born on December 15, 1943, in Mooresville, North Carolina to Johnson Washington Mayhew and Macie Shipp Mayhew and was welcomed by five older siblings. Raised in Mooresville, North Carolina, Samuel attended Dunbar School for his primary and high school education and graduated in 1962.  He was affectionately known as "Mac" or "Sam" by his family, friends, and co-workers throughout his life until he passed away on November 1, 2024.

Sam, often recognized for his intelligence, was an avid reader and loved history, reading mystery novels, doing crossword puzzles, and watching ESPN. He had a high baseball IQ in addition to his vast knowledge of football and basketball. He played basketball and baseball in his youth and early adulthood. He was a devoted fan of the UNC Tarheels, L.A. Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, L.A. Lakers, and the Dallas Cowboys.

A proud veteran, Sam served in the United States Army from July 1966 until July 1968, demonstrating a commitment to his country during a tumultuous time by earning a Marksman Badge. Following his honorable discharge from military service, he embarked on a career at Superba Print Works, Inc. in Mooresville, North Carolina. At Superba, he was a dedicated member in the Maintenance Department where his reliability shone through as he never missed a day of work during his career.  by earning a Marksman Badge. Sam loved his family and one his last desires was “to be able to sit at the table and eat with his family”.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Johnson Washington Mayhew and Macie Shipp Mayhew; two brothers, William Thomas Mayhew and Walter Johnson Mayhew; and one sister, Shelva Jean Gabriel.

Sam is survived by his brothers, Ronald Mayhew (Mary); and Paul Mayhew (Angie), both of Mooresville, North Carolina and his sisters, Jessie Wilson of Maryland; Gerrall Connor of New York; and Deborah Hooper (Ronnie) of Mooresville, North Carolina.  He also leaves to cherish his memory a special friend, Priscilla McDowell and her sons, Andy Campbell,  and Fred McDowell (Darlene) and Fred’s children, and a great host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends who will miss him dearly.
