Vera Holmes Obituary

Vera Hardin Holmes, a Gastonia, NC native, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, June 26, 2026, surrounded by the family she so dearly loved. Born on August 15, 1940, to the late Lola Mae Webb Hardin and Roger Hardin, Vera spent most of her life in Gastonia. She was also blessed to spend 20 wonderful years in the Davidson, NC community before returning home two years ago. She leaves behind a rich legacy built on a foundation of profound love, dedicated service, and unwavering faith.

After attending Highland High School, Vera dedicated 20 years to the textile industry before an accident led to her early retirement. However, her true life’s work was always matters of the heart. She spent over half a century by the side of her soulmate and the absolute love of her life, Walter Holmes, Jr., including 40 beautiful years of marriage.

Her spiritual journey was the cornerstone of her existence. As a woman who truly loved the Lord, she served as a faithful, long-time member of four congregations over her lifetime: Friendship Baptist Church, Friday Memorial Baptist Church, Christ Community Baptist Church, all in Gastonia, and Gethsemane Baptist Church of Lake Norman in Davidson.

Family was Vera’s ultimate pride and joy. One of her greatest pleasures was spending quality time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren—sharing timeless, faith-based life lessons alongside plenty of "Draw 4s" and infectious laughter during fierce games of UNO.

She leaves these cherished memories to her son, Anthony Hardin, and her daughters, Robin Jenkins (William), Sherry Gaston, LaDonna Smith, Tammara Dunlap, and Monique Wilson. Vera’s life was also enriched by her sisters, Marie Kendrick, Lola Adams, and Loretta Jackson, and her brother, Tony Hardin (Pandora). Her immense love multiplies across generations, leaving behind 16 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren who absolutely adored her, alongside a host of loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends Donnis Goode, Charlesann Goode, Frank Jordan, and Myrna Mowrey. She now joins those who preceded her in death: her parents; her husband, Walter; her son, Joe; her brothers, Robert and Roger Jr.; and her sisters, Evelyn Degree and Hattie Burris.

The final chapters of Vera's life were wrapped in exceptional comfort, thanks to a dedicated village of caregivers. For several years, her daughter Monique Wilson provided invaluable live-in assistance. Upon returning to Gastonia, that mantle of loving care was taken up by her grandson and his wife, Sedrekus and Angela Wingate, along with their daughters. Alongside them, her grandson Chad Gingles and granddaughter, LaToya Wingate, this devoted group became affectionately known as “The Quad Guardians of Grandma,” anchoring a larger network of family members who ensured she wanted for nothing.

Vera taught her family how to live, how to love, and how to serve God. While her absence leaves a profound void, her family takes comfort in knowing she is at peace in the presence of the Lord. She is reunited with the love of her life, Walter and son, Joe—likely holding a winning UNO hand, laughing with delight as she lovingly hands one of them a "Draw 4."
